Margret, the President of the Humane Society of Inverness and a member of her staff, Amanda, left the first week of December 2009 and drove the 20+ hours to go to a puppy mill auction in Missouri. We had looked over the catalog and I had told her several dogs that I wanted to get out: the Pekes, the Min Pins, the Yorkie with the bad leg. Margret said they are a penny, fifty cents, and of course more for those breeds like the Yorkies and French Bull Dogs that are still high price pet store items. She was physically ill when she saw 1 day old puppies laid out on a table with their mothers in the cold. She saved what she could, crying for the ones she could not. I applaud the strength of this woman who did a great thing, who saved all these lives. If I supported the mills by paying a pittance of anything for them then so be it, but as I look at each of these little ones both here, at the Sanctuary, and at Inverness, I cry with joy that they are safe. She brought back a total of 85 dogs. One was in such bad condition, it died on the way home. If you would like to help her with the rest of the dogs that she has brought back or are a rescue group that would like to help by taking a few into your own shelters or foster homes, please contact her at bouvierrescue04@aol.com or hsinverness@yahoo.com |
Here are a few of the dogs that were rescued in the puppy mill run: I am #179. I am very scared and will fear bite, but that does not seem to bother my new mom. She gave me a treat when I tried to bite her a picked me up anyway. I had tried to bite me when she picked me and everyone up at Ms. Margret's, but I still got into her van and came down here. I want to love. I am just afraid. I am the first one named. I have been named Ms. Margret in honor of the lady who drove all the way to Missouri and brought back 85 of us from the auctions.

I am #136. I have lived in a cage my whole life. I have eye issues and my teeth hang out but because I was small I was valuable and bred a lot. I was expensive at the auction but there was no way they would let me go with the Amish breeder who thought he might get 2 more litters out of me. I sold for $95 today and there are not enough words to say that can thank Ms. Margret for saving me. I am another one that my new mom looked at in the catalog and told Ms. Margret I had to get out and well, I do.
i am #211. I was sold for 50 cents. I was born in 2002. I am friendly and come running to you. My front teeth are gone and my tongue hangs out, but I am still a sweet, loving girl. I don't like when people say we are not worth rescuing. Can you look at me and say that? I mean, really do we not deserve a chance to live as well?

I am #49. I am a cute little, scared, skinny little Peke girl. I just am not used to being held and attention. It's hard to get used to being held and kissed and loved, even when I stink so bad it's I am #49 and I sold for 55 cents.

Hello! My name is #174. I am 4 years old and a boy. I am shy but sweet. My life so far has been in a cage where I bred numerous female dogs. I do not know the joys of a home or a family's love. Yesterday, I sold for one cent. I guess that's all my life was worth, ONE PENNY! I guess that must be a lot to some as they think that enables the breeders to breed more. No one wanted me. One penny was all my life was worth. It did not make me happy until I found myself in the arms of a loving woman who promises me that I will learn the joys of a family.

I am #56. I am a very emaciated little Peke girl born in February of 2006. My hair is matted and I have a skin issue. I was used to breed Peek a Poos. I got a kiss today and I was so happy to get that. I have a new mom and she tells me that one day I will have a mom that will not have so many to take care of and you know what? I had a big meal tonight! It was so good! I also got a clean bed to jump into!

I am #80. I was born in February of 2003. I have some eye issues. My one eye is cloudy but they say we are going to get it fixed. I am a cutie and my new mom says I look like one of my Auntie Tina's dogs. I don't know, but I am glad someone thinks I am beautiful. My life wasn't worth much. I sold for 50 cents.
The dogs in the above photos are now at the Sanctuary Animal Refuge. There are still many more left at the Humane Society of Inverness shelter. Below is a photograph of Margret and her volunteers and staff giving shots, getting dogs settled, wormed, fed and watered. If you are a rescue and want to help with some that Margret still has, please contact her. If you are someone with a huge heart and can send a donation or volunteer, then read the stories of these little ones, some with no teeth, some with eye infections, some severely emaciated, etc. The tags on the dogs' necks have always been an emotional issue for us. They go with the dogs to remind people of what they have been freed from. 85 dogs were saved from a life of breeding!
