OUR PURPOSE:

  •  to inspire awareness in the community and surrounding counties about the unwanted
animals in need and in methods to control the population of unwanted animals through
low cost spaying and neutering, low cost vaccination and microchipping programs
  •  to report cases of cruelty and neglect to the appropriate agencies and hold the
    parties responsible
  •  make every effort to help owners find lost pets and to provide shelter for homeless
pets until we can find appropriate homes for them
  •  to provide education and training in the care and treatment of all animals
  •  provide pet therapy for nursing homes and similar facilities

GOALS FOR 2010:

  •  to raise funds to upgrade our current shelter facilities and buildings.
  •  continue our strong relations with county shelters in surrounding areas to help them
place and alter their unwanted pets
  •  continue our community awareness programs

OUR MISSION:

  • The mission statement for the Humane Society of Inverness Inc. is to aid in the
reduction of the suffering of unwanted animals through education and promoting
    responsible pet ownership.
  •  This mission is accomplished through volunteers who investigate both prospective
foster homes and "forever" homes for the homeless pets in our care.
  •  Assist members of our community by offering a low cost spay/neuter facility, as well
as providing a safe haven for homeless pets that would otherwise face euthanasia.

HUMANE SOCIETY OF INVERNESS:

We are a privately run 501 (c) (3) charity under IRS regulations, formed in September of
2004.  All donations are fully tax deductible.

All of our donations are used to support HSI activities, including our SpayMobile, housing of
homeless pets, supporting our foster families, transporting homeless animals to safety,
feeding and veterinary care of those animals that are our in our care.

SOME RECENT RESCUE ACTIVITIES:

Recently, we went to a puppy mill auction and rescues 84 dogs from a puppy mill that was being closed
down.  They were actually auctioning off their dogs to other puppy mills in their area to "get one more litter
out of them".  Our Humane Society President, Margret Nolan, heard them talking around her about drowing
their "old stock" in the farm pond.  Another group was laughing about how they use a gun and target
practice when they are thinning their non performing stock.  Another man told the other 2, "I don't have
time to waste on that nonsense!  I just cut their throats and throw them in the dump pile."

Margret had rented an Enterprise van to rescue as many as possible.  They did not know that she was from
an undercover rescue group, thought she was a puppy mill person and waved her through the gate.  She
was UNDERCOVER now.  She pretended to have a puppy mill in Florida to get them to talk freely around her.
She couldn't stand to see the conditions they were in.  It was 13 degrees that day.  The dogs were in wire
cages, mesh bottoms, no blankets, no food or water.  There were no heaters in the buildings.  She
witnessed a Pekinese with NO EYES with a liter that looked to be a couple of days old with her babies out
on the bare wire in that cold.  She was able to save another female that was very ill, but the face that
someone bought the 3 day old babies and that momma to breed haunts her.  The one that she was able to
rescue was so ill she actually died on the transport back.  Margret had to leave the buildings 3 times that
day and go to a restroom to vomit because the conditions of the animals were so awful.  She rescued 85,
with the one Peke not making it, so 84 came back to our kennel on 12/13/09.  We had several volunteers
helping to settle them in but they were all so matted we had to pay a groomer for 4 days to come out.  She
only charged us $10 a dog and not only bathed them, but shaved them, trimmed their nails, cleaned their
ears, etc.  We had to temporarily employ an additional 3 kennel workers to handle the additional dogs, as
well as the 100 plus animals we already had in residence.  Oh -- did I mentioned that we had another puppy
mill rescue that arrived on Thanksgiving Day with 41 dogs!

We were interviewed on WLBE AM 790 Sunday, December 20th, about the rescue and The Mosby
Foundation has written about us and sent out an appeal.  We have gotten a lot of well wishes from the
rescue community in general but we really need your help.

We are in desperate need of funding to help us offset our costs for what we have already spent and need
to replenish our operating funds.  We have spent more than $20,000 so far and have received $2,000 in
donations from the public and another $8,400 from PetSmart Charities towards this rescue.  We now have
more than 150 dogs to care for and a few dozen cats, 7 county shelters calling us daily to rescue more from
them and not being able to help, other rescues asking us to rescue injured animals.  We have in residence
one dog with 2 broken legs, a dog with an amputated leg, another one that was full of bullets when the vet
saved her, a deaf dog that has special needs, several dogs receiving long term rehabilitation, as well as
several puppies and adult dogs and cats that need special nutritional requirements to get back to optimum
health.  We also have several dogs in foster care that were about to be euthanized and were too pregnant
to spay.  They are all in foster homes with their litters and we need to provide care for them.

We are appealing for any help you can give us.  We desperately need dog food, large stainless steel bowls,
the large hanging stainless steel water buckets and pooper scoopers.  Did I mention dog food?  We need
collars and leashes, soft dogs beds as well as the Kuranda type of beds are desperately needed.  Wire
crates are also needed.  However, even more than the supplies, we need to replenish the costs we have
spent so far.  We need emergency financial assistance.
